Landscaping in Trumbull, CT

Trumbull's housing stock is mostly postwar suburban, and that shapes what a property here usually needs. Colonials, splits and ranches went up through the 1950s and 60s on half-acre to acre lots across Daniels Farm, Trumbull Center and the streets around White Plains Road, while Nichols mixes older homes with newer infill. The common thread is a foundation planting that is now sixty years old. Yews and junipers set in when the house was new have swallowed the front windows and crowded the siding, and the original grade has usually settled back toward the foundation. On a Trumbull lot like that, the first honest step is taking out what has outgrown the house, then rebuilding the front in plants scaled to a two-story colonial instead of a nursery pot.

Under the turf is glacial till, a dense stony mix that drains unevenly and hides ledge close to the surface on the higher ground. The granite that forms the cliffs in Pequonnock River Valley Park does not stop at the park line. On a Trumbull lot it turns up as a shelf two feet down that makes a simple tree pit into a rock job. Wet corners are the other constant, since brooks feeding the Pequonnock cross dozens of back yards, and work within a hundred feet of a wetland or watercourse goes to the town's Inland Wetlands and Watercourses Commission before a shovel moves. That gets sorted out first, with grading and drainage sized to the water the site actually gets.

The neighborhoods diverge from there. Tashua sits on high northwest ground near the town's Tashua Knolls golf course, where larger lots catch more wind and more sun and irrigation earns its keep on thin soil over rock. Long Hill, the section that holds Old Mine Park and the nineteenth-century mine workings behind it, runs to shadier wooded parcels where moss beats turf and the honest recommendation is a shade garden rather than another round of seed. Around Pinewood Lake and Canoe Brook Lake, what goes in the ground near the water and what feeds it both end up in the lake, which argues for restraint on fertilizer and for deep-rooted plantings along the bank.

Deer travel the Pequonnock corridor and the Rails to Trails greenway year-round, so anything hosta-shaped along those back property lines is a losing bet in Trumbull. A planting list that survives leans on inkberry, sweetspire, bayberry, little bluestem, ferns and sedges under the mature oaks. The town's Conservation Commission has pushed the same direction for years, campaigning against Japanese barberry because dense stands of it hold the humidity ticks need, and running its 1,000 Trees for Trumbull planting effort. Pulling barberry and burning bush out of a back border and putting natives in their place does double duty: fewer ticks, more birds.

Both ends of the year are hard on plants in this town. Winter salt off Route 25 and Main Street burns roadside beds, freeze-thaw heaves shallow-rooted shrubs out of the till, and the wet springs that green up the Pequonnock also bring fungal pressure to lawns. Then summer arrives and Trumbull lives outside, at the Twin Brooks ponds, on the rail trail, and in the back yard. A patio and planting plan that holds up here has to account for August humidity, heavy October leaf drop from old oaks, and a driveway that gets salted in December.
