Seasons are harder on plants here than a few miles inland. Nor'easters push surge and salt spray off the Sound, and the same wind that scours the beach at Sherwood Island State Park can burn the exposed face of a coastal hedge by February. Summer flips the problem on sandy Compo lots, where irrigation has to be tuned zone by zone so beds are not drowned while the turf goes gold. Spring and fall cleanups, bulb planting for April color, and holiday décor for the party run all get scheduled around that rhythm.
