Landscaping in Northern Westchester County, NY

Northern Westchester is glacial country. The ice left ridges of exposed granite and gneiss, thin soil sitting on ledge, and low swales that hold water for days after a storm. Two centuries of farming added the stone walls that still run through the woods in [Pound Ridge](/service-area/northern-westchester-county-ny/pound-ridge/), Cross River, South Salem, and Waccabuc, and much of the region drains into the Croton watershed, so what happens on one property matters well past its own boundary. The result is a landscape that photographs beautifully and quietly works against you: mature oak canopy that shades out turf, deer pressure that can strip an unprotected bed by June, and drainage that has to be solved before a single plant goes in the ground.

Property character changes every few miles here. [Armonk](/service-area/northern-westchester-county-ny/armonk/) and Chappaqua run to larger contemporary houses on wooded acre-plus lots. [Katonah](/service-area/northern-westchester-county-ny/katonah/), Bedford Hills, Mount Kisco, Goldens Bridge, and Scotts Corner mix walkable village-scale yards with 18th- and 19th-century houses that deserve planting suited to their age, and Lewisboro gathers several of those hamlets under one town line.
