Mount Kisco fits a surprising number of property types into roughly 3.1 square miles. Captain Merritt's Hill holds homes well over a century old on mature lots, where a new bed has to work around established roots and stone walls that were there first. Mount Kisco Chase, by contrast, is a compact community of 86 single-family houses with uniform grading and plantings still filling in. Approach the village along Route 133 and you pass stately Victorians and Colonials with deep front lawns, while the streets closest to the downtown core sit on small parcels where screening matters more than open space. One design vocabulary does not serve all of them.

Patios and beds often need engineered drainage instead of a simple pitch, and planting pockets get cut into ledge rather than dug, so we treat grading and drainage as the first step of any installation on this ground.

Outdoor life here keeps a village rhythm. People walk downtown for dinner, past the Municipal Complex historic district with its 1932 Town and Village Hall and 1936 post office, so back yards tend to get used for the quieter hours rather than for entertaining crowds. Out on Chestnut Ridge Road, Westmoreland Sanctuary keeps 640 acres and 7.5 miles of trail open year-round, and that layered, soft-edged woodland look is exactly what many homeowners want their own back property line to become. At 43 miles from the city, weekday evenings here are short. High-fuss gardens do not survive that schedule.

Each season asks for something different in this village. Spring runoff moves fast down the sloped lots off the hill and finds the same channels every year, blowing out bed edges on properties that were never graded for it. Summer dries the shallow soil over ledge weeks before deeper ground gives up. Fall means leaf volume from canopies that have been dropping on the same Mount Kisco streets since before that 1932 Village Hall opened its doors. Winter is when the deer do their damage, and Northern Westchester carries enough of them to strip yews, arborvitae, and rhododendron to bare stems by February. Protecting mature specimens through that is what our tree and plant health care is for.

Our answer to most of this is to plant what already belongs here.
